When most people imagine Andalusia, they picture flamenco in Seville or the busy beaches of the Costa del Sol. But in the far south-east of the region, in the province of Almería, there is another Andalusia: quiet, sun-drenched and almost untouched. Here, between the white village of Níjar and the volcanic coast of Cabo de Gata, the pace of life slows right down. It is a landscape made for retreat.
Níjar: a white village in the hills
Níjar sits on the slopes of the Sierra Alhamilla, looking out over the plain towards the sea. Its whitewashed houses, narrow streets and small squares have kept a traditional character, and the village is known for its pottery and its colourful handwoven rugs called jarapas. Walking through it in the late afternoon, when the light turns golden and the streets are quiet, is one of the simple pleasures of a stay here.
Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park
Just south of Níjar lies the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, one of the largest protected coastal areas in the western Mediterranean. Its volcanic origins give the landscape an unusual beauty: dark rock formations, wild beaches, hidden coves and dry hills dotted with agave and palms. The park is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and part of a UNESCO Global Geopark.
Some of its loveliest places include:
- Playa de los Genoveses and Playa de Mónsul, two of the most beautiful undeveloped beaches in Spain.
- San José, a relaxed village and a good base for coastal walks.
- The Cabo de Gata lighthouse and the nearby Arrecife de las Sirenas, the “mermaids’ reef”.
- Las Salinas, the salt flats where flamingos are often seen.
Why this landscape suits yoga and meditation
Almería is one of the sunniest and driest places in Europe, so days are often bright and the sky wide open. There are few crowds, little noise and a lot of space. The combination of mountains, desert-like hills and sea creates a feeling of being far from the everyday world, even though you are only a short flight from much of Europe.
It is also a landscape that teaches simplicity. Water is precious, plants grow slowly, and nothing is in a hurry. Many people find that this quality seeps into their practice.
When to visit
Spring and autumn are ideal, with warm, clear days and comfortable evenings. Winters are mild compared with much of Europe, making this a lovely escape from grey northern skies. High summer is hot, so outdoor practice is best in the early morning and evening.
Getting there
Almería airport is the closest airport to Níjar. Málaga and Granada are further away but offer more international connections, and the drive from Granada passes through dramatic mountain scenery. A car or arranged transfer is the easiest way to reach the villages and beaches of the natural park.
