Searching for a retreat can feel strangely stressful. There are thousands of options, every photo looks peaceful, and it is hard to know which one is actually right for you. Whether this is your first yoga retreat or your tenth spiritual journey, these questions will help you look past the pictures and choose with your heart and your head.
1. What do you really need right now?
Before you look at destinations, look at yourself. Are you exhausted and in need of rest? Curious about meditation? Going through a change in life and looking for clarity? Wanting adventure with meaning? A retreat built around deep rest feels very different from one built around travel and discovery. Be honest about what you need, not what you think you should want.
2. Do you want to stay in one place or travel?
Some retreats stay in a single beautiful location, which makes it easier to settle into a rhythm. Others are journeys that move between places, combining practice with cultural discovery. Both are valuable. If you love exploring, a travelling retreat can be extraordinary; if you are depleted, staying put may serve you better.
3. Which practices call to you?
“Yoga retreat” can mean anything from dynamic daily classes to gentle stretching. Look closely at what is actually practised: yoga, meditation, breathwork, Qigong, sound and music, movement meditation such as Sufi whirling, journaling, or time in silence. If you are a beginner, check that the programme welcomes beginners. If you are experienced, check there is enough depth.
4. Who is guiding?
The person leading a retreat shapes the whole experience. Read about their background and approach, and notice how they communicate with you before you book. Do they answer your questions personally? Do you feel heard? A good guide is someone you feel you could trust with your vulnerability as well as your hamstrings.
5. How big is the group?
Small groups usually allow more personal attention and a closer sense of community; larger groups can feel more anonymous but sometimes more spacious. Ask how many people typically attend, and whether there is time alone as well as time together.
6. What is the daily rhythm?
Ask what a typical day looks like. Is there free time? How early are mornings? Are excursions included or optional? A retreat that is too full can leave you more tired than when you arrived; one that is too empty may not give you the support you hoped for.
7. What exactly is included?
Compare carefully: accommodation, meals, transfers, excursions, materials and any support before and after the retreat. Some retreats include preparation calls or integration sessions after you get home, which can make a big difference to how the experience stays with you.
8. What happens after you go home?
The real test of a retreat is how you feel a month later. Coming home can be a shock, and the insights that felt so clear can fade quickly. Look for retreats that help you integrate what you experienced: a simple practice you can continue, a community, or a follow-up conversation.
9. Does the place speak to you?
Finally, trust your intuition. Sometimes a place simply calls you: the desert, the sea, a sacred city, a green island. That pull is worth listening to. The outer landscape has a way of opening an inner one.
Preparing for your first retreat
- Arrive with as few expectations as possible. Every retreat is different from what you imagine.
- Tell the organisers about any health conditions, injuries or dietary needs before you travel.
- Pack comfortable clothes for practice, layers for changing temperatures and a journal.
- Consider a short digital detox: letting family know you will be less available can help you be fully present.
- Plan a gentle first day back home rather than going straight back to work.

Frequently asked questions
Is a yoga retreat suitable for beginners?
Many are. Check the programme and ask the organiser directly whether it welcomes beginners and how practices are adapted.
What should I ask before booking a retreat?
Ask who guides it, how big the group is, what a typical day looks like, exactly what is included, and what support there is before and after the retreat.
How do I choose between a retreat in one place and a travelling retreat?
Staying in one place makes it easier to rest and settle into a rhythm; a travelling retreat combines practice with discovery. Choose based on your energy and what you need right now.
